3 Configs:

Base Model (2.3, 8GB Ram, 256Gb Flash) : $2199
Higher End (2.6, 8GB Ram, 512Gb Flash) : $2799
Maxed Out (2.7, 16GB Ram, 756GB Flash) : $3749

The "base" models that they offer - basically anything that hasn't been upgraded, I do not believe that the stores carry any with a modified configuration.

Some stores carry maxed out versions like they do with the air.

I have heard of that, yes - "base" wasn't the best choice of words, part of the reason I used quotes - I meant like, "standard," I guess? Still not quite sure - I mean like you won't find a median, something like only the RAM upgraded to maximum (which I can still be wrong on) instead of the other components, sort of "all-or-nothing" so to speak, base or maxed out in other words.

I am not much help here.

No you're correct. They either carry the base models or completely maxed out ones. I believe a store near here carries a "maxed" version but only maxed to 512GB
