which egpu should one get if its not for games. mainly transitions, motion fx, alpha channel video clips in final cut and motion would be used. grading video is on the rare side since i deal with animation. the mini performs fine without an egpu but you have to wait a moment for things to render once dropped in the timeline. would a rx 570 or 580 make a much smoother experience or would a vega 56 or 5700 make a night and day type experience? I dont care to spend too much on an egpu because i dont game. I did try out the first blackmagic egpu once for a fcpx project and i dont remember it giving me a super memorable performance but that may have been that particular egpu. I guess i want to ask, should i get one of these noise boxes on my desk or can i do almost just as well without one for my uses. please dont mention benchmarks as that doesnt explain real world uses.

I’ve used an RX 580 and a Vega 56 with a MacBook Pro. The price increase didn’t warrant the 11% improvement for me.

I would go with the RX 580.

If you are tight with budget, RX570 is a great deal with current price level. I think it offers best bang for the buck value.

RX580 is obviously better performing, but it’s more expensive and meaningless for whta you’d plan to do.

I'll probably end up grabbing an RX570 myself. I have a gaming machine with a GTX 1080 already, and use my Mac mainly for photo and video editing (nothing crazy). The Vega cards are overkill for my needs, and the gap between the 570 and 580 in terms of performance is too minor to warrant the increased cost, in my eyes.

FWIW, 5700 isn't compatible yet, as far as I've read. If it was, I'd highly consider it myself.
