I'm considering getting an external thundbolt drive to boot my late 2012 iMac from, given that despite 32Gb RAM and a 3.2GHz CPU it still takes ages to load apps and boot. Is it better to buy an off the shelf one (if so, does it matter if it's powered or not), or build my own?
I'd rather have an enclosure that powered from the thunderbolt connection itself but don't know if that makes a difference, so any thoughts there would be good too
