I'm getting a new "trashcan" Mac Pro, and am trying to decide which external hard drive to get. I am looking at two 3TB drives from LaCie and Seagate:

https://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10600

http://m.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/backup-plus-desk/

The drive will be used for time machine backups as well as music/movie/picture/general storage to supplement the internal 256gb I have. My questions are: Are these drives good choices for a Mac Pro companion? What is causing the large price difference between the two, or is it just the addition of thunderbolt? Will I miss the thunderbolt if I do the seagate? (From what I can tell its no faster than USB 3.0 for these drives...) I am open to suggestions for other drives as well. Thanks!

The price difference is largely just the Thunderbolt pricing overhead for the chipset to drive it.

The other thing about the Lacie drives is that they only have a single thunderbolt port so you're not able to daisy-chain them, thus losing 2 thunderbolt ports in the process. If you want thunderbolt, I would suggest the LaCie 2big drives, which is 2 hard drives in an enclosure with 2 thunderbolt ports, allowing daisy chaining of other thunderbolt devices.
