Which External Thunderbolt Drive?

I'm getting a new 27" iMac soon to replace my five-year-old iMac.
And I'll get the new iMac with either a 512GB or 1TB internal SSD.

So, to replace the Western Digital FireWire external drives I use now,
which are the best Thunderbolt drives in the 4TB to 8TB range?

What makes them the best?

• Speed?
• Durability?
• Flexibility?
• Other?

I've been considering the Western Digital and G-Technology external T'Bolt drives. I'll be using at least two external T'Bolt drives, one for backup and the other for data files, ranging from video and photographs to music and written documents.

I've been using the Lacie "rugged" Firewire drives and have had good luck with them. Once I move to a TB machine I'll start with those I suppose.

However I'm not a fan of their vertically oriented desktop drives. I had one of those in the past and the cat knocked it over, killing the drive instantly... I sent the drive off to one of those high-end super-expensive drive recovery outfits in Cali and it was so bad that even they couldn't do anything with it.
