Can someone recommend a good and fast (not too expensive) external harddrive for use with a Mac? Which brands are good?
Thx in advance!

There is actually a 5 year warranty. If you read the notes on the Mercury Elite page it states:

"Two Year Repair/Replacement Warranty- In addition to OWC's Warranty, the Seagate Barracuda mechanism inside this solution has an additional 3 years warranty direct with Seagate.
Note: Do not disassemble or otherwise open your OWC solution prior to
the conclusion OWC's 2 year Warranty period. Doing so will void the
remainder of the OWC warranty."

These are great drives and the folks at OWC stand by their products. Considering that the cheapest (less reliable) 500 GB USB2 LaCie drive on Buy.com is $279.95 and the 500 GB OWC FW 400/800 drives are 309.00 (or 289.99 for a 500 GB FW400/USB2) I would buy these with confidence.

That said, what are you using these for? If you're doing real-time video I'd suggest getting the biggest FW 800 drives you can find. If all it is for is a backup drive a cheapo USB2/FW 400 solution would be fine. Either way check out OWC's drives.
