ma.
First I was going to get an Ipod classic for my 50GB of music but testing in Apple store the Ipod Touch blew away the Classic in sound quality.
Does the 5G have the best ipod Touch sound quality?Any chance the Nano 7G sounds better?

I have both the touch 5G and the nano 7G and they don't sound much different to me. They also don't sound much different than the 4G touch I used to have.

Thats good news since I love sound of 7G Nano but not enough capacity.Have you ever heard the 5.5 Classic.Suppose to have great sound with Woolfson Dac but its so old and that hard drive based player could present a lot of issues.

Honestly, i find all ipods sound similar but Ipod touch 1 was believed to have wolfson chip.

I think more importantly you need a good headphone to actually able to bring out the drive of the player. Stock earbuds should go right in the trash can, and im talking about the earpods as well.

Totally disagree on the Earpods. There is a simple mod where you put foamies on them and play music through them for 50 hours or so.Difference like night and day.I hated them out of the box.The foamies tame the harsh treble.

The first iPod touch. I had a first gen iPod nano and the audio quality was superb.
That Wolfson chip again. So tempting to get a refurbished 5.5 on ebay but that spinning hard drive and old tech school scares me.Wish they kept using that chip. The 5G Touch sounded so damn good in Apple Store compared to the present 160 GB classic I think Ill just shell out for the 64GB refurbished model.

The earpods might rival other £5 to £10 options, but they're still pretty poor and not worth listening to IMHO. You can't legitimately mention those and good sound quality in the same sentence.

Mine went straight in the trash.

I just bought a refurbished 64GB touch and love it. Get it and enjoy.

Well can you give me a reasonably priced option

I've been using the Klipsch Image S4i's for around three years now, and for the price, they sound great! I payed $100 for them back then, but you can find them on Amazon for under $50

I also just got some new style Beats Studio's to try. I know I know, they're beats, but they said they improved them. But I did say try. I'll probably end up getting some Sennheiser Momentums or something. Just thought I'd give them a shot because they have an all red model, and I want to like them.

As for the iPod sound quality debate. I'm perfectly fine with my new iPod classic, but I did just order a 5th gen 30GB from Gamestop for $40 shipped (scratch & scuff). That way I can try it, and if I don't like it return it. Or just return it anyway and find an 80GB 5.5G and upgrade the HDD and battery.

thanks but the Image 4 have a big reliability problem according to amazon reviews and many say they break easily.Any other headphone suggestions?

Thats you modify the earphone itself but driver is the same one, apple just reinvented the shape so that it produces more bass.

Try alternative 30-40 earphone, eg. Yuin pk 3 and you will know why apple earphone is way overpriced and its not wise to buy them unless it comes in bundle.

The 5.5 is suppose to be the best sounding device.

The iphone 4 is also very good.

I was loathe to buy an old ipod with a hd, but I bought a refurbished 5.5g off ebay and did the Tarkan mod to it, replacing the hd with a 128gb SD card. Battery life is impressive, and UI much smoother. Would recommend, and of course eliminates the noise of the hd and the risk of the hd failing.

Would love to do that Tarken mod but my skills are not strong enough

Took a look at these Yuin PK3 and they sound like just what Ive been looking for at right price but the reliability factor on Amazon is big. Many complain they break easily or one side just stops working. This is second recommended earphones that Amazon reviewers say break easily.I think Im going to ignore this idea and take a chance on these.

Yup, there are plenty mod PK3 out there but 7 outta 10 pairs will malfunction soon as you used it. Not a good way to burn 15 bucks for an earphone that lasts a week.
About the comments that original breaks easy and one side just stop functions i think they are talking about old stock PK3 where the cord got stiff and breaks easy. New stock solve them problems but i can't assure you because where i live, they offers 1 yr warranty where i can just go to them to get it fixed or get a brand new replacement. Some used it for over 2 years so why not take a chance?
