¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hello everyone

I have bought an Apple TV 4K which I currently use with my Panasonic plasma HD TV. I bought the 4K model because I will at some point upgrade to a 4K TV.

I still use an old Harman Kardon AV receiver, which lacks HDMI, and a set of 5.1 Canton MX which works well enough.

Rather than getting a new HDMI-capable AV receiver, I was thinking of an HDMI extractor to be able to get the sound into the Harman receiver. Then, later, I will look into upgrading also the surround system.

The Harman receiver has optical inputs, but I'm a bit bewildered as to which HDMI extractor would be good to get. Is it as simple as getting a model with HD video out and an optical SPDIF out, or do I need to look at specific audio formats, Hz and the like?

And what about brands – looking at Amazon I see no brand that I recognise. What is a good reliable brand?

And lastly, is an HDMI extractor a bad idea, meaning that I should instead look for a new receiver?

Thanks very much in advance
Philip

Optical or spdif do not support the high bandwidth audio modes of HDMI - although it's cool that optical uses light to transmit the signal, it is really old. I guess they're better than analog stereo though.

They have been updated for higher bandwidth but not all devices/cables can do that.

Check the specs of the Harman Kardon AV receiver.
