which iOS versions can be hacktivated?

I recently screwed up my Iphone. I didn't brick it but I upgraded my baseband and destroyed myunlock. I'm disappointed but coming to terms with the fact that my Iphone is now an Ipod Touch. I guess I'm hoping that an unlock for 4.1 will become available soon.

In the meantime I was hoping to at least upgrade to 4.01 but I've never had an AT&T account so I'm unable to activate. I fiddled around for a while but the only version I was able to activate without the sim card was 3.1.2 using Blackrain. Jailbreakme won't work because I can't get online until after I activate (which I can't)

Is there anyway to upgrade to 4.0 or higher and then activate without a sim card?

Are you using a 3GS?
3.1.2 was the last version that you didnt need a valid sim to activate.
With 4.0.1 you do need an AT&T sim but you can get one or borrow one for a few minutes.
Or ebay for $2 or something.
Even old inactive sims will do the trick.

It is a 3gs. I wouldn't mind picking up an AT&T sim card from E-bay. So, any sim card will definitely work? I see many unactivated sim cards on E-bay for just a few bucks.
