I currently have the iPad (1st Gen.) 32GB, wifi + 3G.

I've only used the 3G once, so I'll go just wifi this time.

I'm looking at either a refurbished 3rd Generation or the new iPad 4.

I can get a 32GB refurb for about $499 after tax or 16GB of the new iPad for $499 plus tax.

This will mainly be for internet, email, music, pics, movies, and to take on trips...

Any thoughts?

If the upgrades from the 3rd to 4th are a must for you, as well as the extra money, then get the 4th Gen. I am more than pleased with my iPad 3, and I have no desire to upgrade until next year.

Are you considering the iPad mini? It's cheaper, and lighter for traveling -which you seem to want it for. :)

and for my needs i don't think i need to upgrade to the 4, right?

indeed, my 3 runs everything just fine. Theres no real demanding apps/features of IOS that would cause your ipad3 to feel inferior.
If you had and iphone 5.. id say go with the 4.. just to have the same charger. (which is my only reason i wish i had the 4)

If you want to pay the extra money go with the 4. See how you first like the Ipad 3, if not satisfied try Ipad 4. Ipad 3 is at great price right now, even the 2.
