Dear Mac Friends,

I asked Google AI this question:

"Do I need an Internet service provider to use Apple Maps?"

Their answer was no I do not need a service provider for the iPhone as long as I have an iPhone with iOS 7 or later. They also said that Apple Maps is updatable by downloading the updates. How would I download the updates if I don't have a service provider for the iPhone? Can I use the WiFi connection I'm using now for my MacBook?

You need internet to download map either Wi-Fi, cellular or Ethernet.

Apple Maps allows offline map download for iOS 17 and above. You can use other apps like Organic Maps for offline navigation.

Hi User #07242024,

Can I use any kind of WiFi connection for downloading to the iPhone without a cellular service?

The reason why I ask is because I was considering buying the iPhone strictly for Apple Maps.

You'd need Wi-Fi with Internet.... not sure what you mean by "any kind of WiFi" but yeah, normal Wi-Fi is fine.

Why not just buy a GPS though? iPhone will certainly do the job but seems like a weird solution 🧐

What I wish I had was a way to make my car a red dot on a map so I would know where I'm at in relation to the map.

And it would be real cool if my car would move on the map as I'm driving.

As the iPhone in the car moves, the map moves too whenever there’s internet. But being outside you need to have cellular or Wi-Fi from hotspot. You may also use GPS for offline maps like Organic Maps as I mentioned before.

Yeah, iPhone or any GPS really will do that. Well, not a "red dot" per se but some sort of icon.

Seriously, though, what's wrong with just a stand-alone GPS? They're very inexpensive.
