I take a lot of photos out walking and particularly love close photos of flowers, insects, etc which are hard to get without a manual focus or special close-up mode.

People often talk about "macro mode" but this isn't exactly the same, and I know some iPhones have ultra-wide lens but I see mixed comments on how this works - if it's automatic, if you can manually engage it, etc. Trying to get a phone to auto-focus on a flower that's moving in the breeze can be really hard.

So.. which iPhones (say 13 upwards) have the ability to do this sort of thing, and how does it vary?

I'm considering 13 Pro, 14, 14 Pro and 15 (14 pro is the dream but is out of my budget). It's one of the main things I want to use my phone for, most days, so it's an important feature.

Thanks.

Ultra close up shots with Macro mode were introduced with the 13 Pro series. Then every Pro series that followed, 14, 15. The standard iPhones do not have macro mode.

The mode can be set to activate automatically when the subject gets close enough.

Thanks... So what is the ultra wide camera used for on the 13/14/15 standard models?

I can see you can turn on/off the automatic macro mode, can you force it to close-up mode?

The main purpose of the ultra wide camera is to take wider "zoomed out" photos that can squeeze more into an image.

The ultra wide lens is used to take in more of a scene into the shot and makes some nice perspectives. I have macro mode enabled and it is forced on once close enough to the subject.

The Pro models have auto focus on the ultra wide lens to enable close up macro photography.

I suggest using external lenses with case specifically from REEFLEX or moment, and Sandmarc. They all sell a 75mm long range macro & 10x closeup macro. I use REEFLEX lenses… best I’ve ever had. I’ve had moment lenses, but haven’t used their new T-series lenses. But Reeflex is probably the best at this point.

https://reeflexstore.com/en-us lots of great YouTube videos showcasing their lenses. I have the 2x telephoto, 110° wide and the 220° fisheye. I plan n getting the 75mm long range macro and anamorphic lenses soon.
