I was waiting til today to buy an iPod touch but must say I'm not very impressed. Therefore, I took a look at the refurbs and there's a 32GB for £179.

Are there any actual hardware differences between the new vs previous (apart from memory)?

None at all. There is a software difference, though. The new model has voice control.

actually, the newer touch has about double the processor speed

It's 50% faster not double. Though that is still very impressive. However it's only really worth going for if gaming on the touch is important to you. If your primary wants are for music then it isn't really worth it.
