Which is the best external hard disk for macbook pro.10.6.8

I am looking forward for buying an external portable USB or fire wire supported hard disk for my mbpro snow leopard version 10.6.8. Kindly help me in getting one which is more suitable or compatible.

This hard disk am getting for the data back up from the disk utility pane as my os is corrupted now after the installation of mavericks.

I like the WD My Passport USB drives, but any USB3 drive will be fine for backups.

Just curious... are you saying your external drive was working fine and now stopped working after the Mavs upgrade? There was an incompatibility with some Western Digital software and Mavericks that caused disk problems. Do you happen to be running a WD disk with some of the WD software installed?

If so, you may find your problem goes away if you uninstall that WD software.
