Which is the last version of Final Cut Studio to work with a G5 Mac please?

Hi all.

About to jump from FCE to FCP....reading around I see some features are Intel only. I'm sure it's been asked before but I couldn't find what I was looking for with the search.

Thanks guys...I better get my skates on and buy a copy before they're all updated. Anyone know any good discount places?

Oh and btw, is "Color" an Intel only app then?

I just read it in some comments, actually FCS 2 is installed on our work Avids, but no serial numbers have been entered so its quite useless, and I couldn't try.

(The machines are rent btw.)
 
Final Cut Studio 2 runs on my Powerbook G4! Yes I said G4!

it runs fine too. I also ran FCS2 on my Powermac G5, so you should be golden.


"The New Final Cut Studio" (FCS 3.0) is the only intel ONLY version.

I don't know why though, does not seem as if it's a new code base at all.

Just Apple artificially creating obsolete hardware.

If you go to the link spinnerlys provided it has a list of the gfx cards that will work.

I don't think it's artificial. FCP 6 has some features that are intel only and many 3rd party filters and plugins are intel only as well. The intel machines just kill the PPC machines in terms of speed so trying to keep FCP attached to legacy hardware is getting to be more effort than it's worth, IMO. At some point the line has to be drawn.

As for the FCS 2 not working unless it's Intel is incorrect which may have been corrected by the person who stated this so sorry if I am repeating it. I am using Final Cut Studio 2 on a G4 temporarily and it is working OK. So on a G5 I do not see any reason why it will not work.

As has been said, FCS2 officially supports both PPC and Intel. We have two G5 towers running it.
