Which jailbreak and unlock to use.

Hi all, my name's S373N and i'm new to this.
I'm currently waiting on an unlocked 3G 8gb I purchased on ebay for 345 AUS and wanted to ask a few questions.
Okay, so seeing its unlocked, its obviously not 3.1.3, but the fact that it has wifi greyed out implies its the software version that had issues with that.
My question is, what's the highest (and stable) version I can upgrade the firmware to so I can unlock it to use any network sim?

what do you mean by custom?
the one from apple server?
I just want to be able to but 3.1.2 on it then unlock it without any wifi troubles.
please be more specific

just another quick question.
my phone being 3g and not 3gs, does that mean I can update to 3.1.3 without it messing with my baseband and not letting me unlock?

can I upgrade my 3g to 3.1.3 and unlock it or not yet?

No, you still can't update to an Apple stock 3.1.3 firmware.

sorry, I've read that with custom firmware 3.1.3 I can update without it altering the baseband.
what is the best custom firmware to use and jalbreaker and unlock? :p
 
new question, may as well disregard the previous posts.

will redsn0w 0.94 jailbreak AND unlock firmware 3.1.2?
or would I need an earlier release? e.g. 0.93/0.92
