In October or November 2007 I bought a 2.2 Ghz MacBook when the new model was released. My plan was to keep it two years and then give it to my wife to replace her G4 iBook.

I planned to purchase a entry level MacBook Pro in the Fall of 2009.

It is now almost Fall and I am ready to buy before Sept. 8 to get the free iPod Touch.

However, the MacBook Pro line is completely overhauled since 2007.

The equivalent updated version of the MacBook Pro to the entry two years ago is the 15 inch 2.66 Ghz with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 256MB graphics board.

However, there is now the 15 inch 2.53 Ghz without the 9600M with 256MB graphics board.

I use the usual iLife and Internet Mac programs plus I am a heavy user of Aperture 2.0 and a light user of Photoshop.

I plan to get a 320GB hard drive regardless of model.

Which model do I get?

What do I lose if I don't get the better graphics board?

What programs gain from having a better graphics board?

SL now has Open CL, so the better graphics could eventually help there. I think the 2.53 is the best option considering you want a fast 15" but don't game. The 9400M is very decent. Or you could wait until next year for Arrandale...
