I purchased my first MBP in Dec 2014, buying a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, with upgraded processor to i5 and 16gb ram - My main use was for Masters work (number of tabs/pdfs) and gaming such as Football Manager. On the whole the Mac was a great machine and apart from 'staingate' (had the screen changed twice and the issue still persisted after) - it was still going strong until a few months back when I accidently spilt water on the screen (so now it boots up but the screen doesn't work).

I am just interested to know some thoughts as to which one would be best for my needs, I was thinking of going for the following:

14MBP 10/16/16 32GB and 1TB - however, niggling in my mind that this is over specing for no need.

However, I have never had one of these before and was curious if for a relatively 'light' user like myself I would need this? I will mainly use this to run Football Manager (my previous Mac did go crazy with the fan as well as over heating when I played this) plus now planning to start a PhD in Jan.

Any thoughts welcomed.

I bet the base 14" MBP would suit you just fine, with the 1 TB upgrade if you'll need the space. I'd monitor the memory pressure graph in the system monitor with your current machine and see if you ever get into even the yellow range with your current tasks before paying for the 32 GB upgrade. The M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB space can also be had for several hundred dollars less and may be worth considering as well.

I’m actually curious whether the base 14”, with the 8/14 core CPU, will have the best battery life of all the 14” MBPs due to it having 6 performance cores rather than 8 (in the 10-core model), most of which you won’t need or use.

I have pre-ordered the 16” and its base 10/16 chipset, but have seriously considered going for the 8:14 with 16GB of RAM. It’s enough power, and I’m thinking may lead to better battery. It’s also faster than a Mac Pro, so…. ?
