I don't know the differences, but I did a voiceover for a video at work once using the iPhone 4's voice recorder app.
I just put a blanket over my head and read the lines. I had intended for it to be a temp track that I'd re-do later, but the parts with my voice sounded just as good as our regular voiceovers, so I never ended up changing it.

The iPhone, because there are two mics, which means a lot of background noise will be cancelled out.
