I recently purchased an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Mini and 2TB WD Blue HDD to consolidate a couple of older external drives and regain some desk space. In the past, a few drives have failed. Thankfully, I noticed during the backup process and not during restoration. With this thought, I considered buying the RAID version of the Elite Pro Mini and setting it up to mirror. However, even two drives can fail. So... my secondary thought was to stick to a single drive backup BUT get a software tool that monitors the drive. That way, hopefully, I'd know when the drive is failing and avoid a major hiccup -- basically, be preemptive.

Initially, I thought of Techtool Pro. Although, now I see Micromat has many products, even multiples featuring drive tests, such as Drive Scope and Checkmate. Beyond less expensive, would either of those be a better fit for my use?
