Where is the sweet spot for performance and price? The older you go the cheaper it becomes but also less powerful. I'm on a sort of tight budget but could save up a bit more.

I just grabbed another MBP 2012 NR on eBay for 200. Runs Catalina fine. I’ve used Pixelmator and iMovie relatively well.
i have the 2015 MBP 15" with the M370X gpu and it's good, but if I were to pick again I would go for the one without the extra graphics to save some power (it doesnt power down completely even when running on integrated graphics)
For me having USB A, cardreader and HDMI with no dongles is a big priority but I do need an usb ethernet adaptor at times which is annoying.
Long story short it depends on your use case unless you are into performance/$ in which case no macbbook would be suitable.
