Blackbook CD 2.0 2 Gigs ram
White Macbook C2D 2.0 , 1 gig ram

They are going to run me roughly the same price. I want to use it mostly for Final Cut Express and other editing programs. I'm just worried about CD being 32, and C2D being 64 bit. Will there be such a big breakthrough in the architecture in the next 5 or 6 years that every CD machine will be outdated?

Thanks

I'd say get the Blackbook. The RAM is something you can use NOW. The 64-bit thing is probably not going to be a huge deal for several years when developers have re-written apps for 64-bit. I realize Leopard will make some difference, but I don't think it will be night and day.

whitebook for sure. if u need a breen screen for film work the 64-bit will make a difference and the ram could be upgraded at a much lower cost than gettin a new computer when u need 64-bit display.

agreed.

You can always buy an extra 1gb ram stick from a cheaper third party vendor and get your macbook with the standard 2x256mb, and then upgrade the other gb later on. This way you get 1.25gb for now and an upgrade to 2gb later when you can afford it. That's what I did. Otherwise you're gonna have to dig deep to into your pockets to buy 2x1gb, and the 2x512mb that you get from apple will go to waste. Sorry if this complicates matters for you.

Hey everyone, thanks for your feedback, but I notice that 2 of the people that tell me to go for C2D own CD macbooks. Is there something I'm missing? Do you guys regret not having a C2D over a CD? I just don't see the technology being around the corner for the 64 bit applications to make such a big difference between the two.

Thanks again

I don't regret my MacBook purchase but I do prefer white.

What are the processor speeds? a C2D has up to 15% better performance than a core duo, but if the core duo processor is 2.16 and the C2D is 1.8 and the core duo comes with more RAM anyway, I'd probably be looking more closely at that one.

Get the higher end white MacBook and put 2GB of ram. If you need more hard drive then buy an external firewire hard drive. Don't get a black one, and go with the C2D..it's faster, and there are less issues with the 2nd gen macbooks.

Get the C2D, you CAN upgrade the ram later, but you CANNOT upgrade the processor. (not easily at least, lol.)

Yep, not many people have a thermal rework station sitting around so they can remove the CPU.

Thanks everyone,
but if I do go with the coreduo, would it be a bad move. I'm not one that needs the latest and greatest. And I'll mostly be using it for FCE, low scale photo editing and writing papers.......
My concern doesn't lie with the colour or the speed increase of the core2duo chip. My main concern is in the 64 bit architecture.

Well, maybe a little bit in the speed increase. When the new apps are made for intel machines, will the core2duo's be even faster than the supposed 15% increase?

I've been pondering pretty much the same thing as you - CD or C2D? Earlier I was all set to get the C2D, then I started reading about all of the Airport problems with them (that don't seem to affect the CD machine, probably because of the pre-N card). So I decided to wait or get a CD, but Apple just came out with a new Airport update that may fix the issues, in which case I would opt for the C2D. Decisions, decisions!

Buy the White MacBook because white represents Apple. Black MacBook looks like a PC.

i can't believe people are saying that! do you know that all powerbooks up to the 2001 pismos were black?? apple started doing grey and white from 2001! so black is not PC, it's more like Ugly=PC :D

BlackBook looks nicer.

Basically same speed but core 2 duo has some fixes on slow programs, 2GB ram will fix that though and ALSO help you do iLife and games alot

I'd have to say the white looks nicer, mostly because it has an almost glossy back to it. The sight of it makes me happy.:apple: :D :). The black seems to look more rough and reminds me of my dell inspirion *cringes* and if it feels anywhere as uncomfortable as it does...I would say go with the white.

Why does no one mention the increase in cache on the C2D? That makes a huge difference. Aside from benchmarks, I can FEEL the difference between a CD and a C2D.

C2D is the way to go. The CPU is noticable faster and you can upgrade the RAM later.

Color should not matter here.
