Hello.

Till now, I (still) have an iPhone SE, but the battery is now <80% and needs to be replaced. Because I like to take photos much, I think about replace my camera (canon g9x) and only use the iphone in future. I like minimalism and would be glad, when I need one thing less.
Also I think, the ultra wide lens would be great for landscape.

But I don't know - which to take - the iphone 11 or the pro (which only makes sense, when I really don't need another cam anymore) or should I wait for the iphone 12 and hope for a triple cam iphone 12 with a better price or a "even better" camera?
The iphone 11 pro is very expensive, but is the tele lens worth it? Is the battery time really more then on the iphone 11?

When I take phots, I would say, I'm an "advanced amateur", but I never print fotos or use it as poster. We (my wife and me) watch them on the ipad or a tv or a lcd screen - not more.

Photo types are landscape fotos, snapshots, "macro-like" photos of flowers, mushrooms and so on, some architecture (castles for example) and sometimes portrait. I never (really) use selfies or videos. I don't need a big zoom. I long time took photos with a fixed lense camera.

Could you let me know your experiences and give me some hints how to decide and if the iphone could replace my cam for future use?

Thanks very much

I wrote this yesterday to someone else:

iPhone upgrade program. You could get the 11 Pro now and pay to upgrade early in the fall if you love the new phone. If not keep paying and own the 11 Pro after two years.

The upgrade from X to XS was minimal but I'm really happy with my 11 Pro. I like the extra battery life, night photo mode, and extra lens so much more than my XS.

Like @MisterSavage said, maybe the upgrade plan is good for you. I like it myself. Now for replacing your camera, that's entirely up to you based on what works best for your needs. Search here for pictures taken by the 11 series or whichever model you're looking into and that may/may not help in your decision.

Personally I’d get another battery for your SE, and use that until the 12 is released. Then decide with what’s on offer then.

I never heard about the update plan or read about it. I'm not sure if it is available here in germany.

Get the 11 pro now, and the upgrade to the 12 pro when it’s out.

This will help stock prices for those of us with stock, lol.

The only thing with the upgrade plan is it is £60 a month before you’ve even added a data plan. Sure if that sort of money is acceptable to the individual but I could think of better things to spend my money on. The iPhone 11 can be had for £30 a month all in right now and I’d imagine the iPhone 12 will be more sensibly priced than the iPhone 12 Pro’s. It depends what you want but I’ve never been convinced the top tier devices offer enough to warrant nearly double the price.

For me it's totally worth it. The price of the upgrade program is the same as if you bought the phone in full (on launch day) with Applecare. $2 a day for something I use every day and enjoy is worth it to me.

In the US the way it works is it's a 0% interest "loan" where you pay monthly installments. If you keep paying for 2 years you own the phone. After 12 payments you can upgrade to the new phone if you want and start another "loan". After 6 payments you can also upgrade to the new phone but you have to pay extra because you didn't make 12 payments.

I get what @The-Real-Deal82 is saying, but I love the payment plan myself. I use Verizon's upgrade plan and I like the fact that I/we can get a new iPhone each year if we choose. Also, the past few years now I've been upgrading at Walmart on Black Friday. They offer gift card deals if you upgrade with the payment plan ($400 for last years models & $300 for this years models). This year I got a XS Max for my wife and I got a $400 gift card. I got my son the 11 and got a $300 gift card. And a $300 gift card for my Pro Max. That's a home run in my book.

Indeed, if you are into phones on that level as many here share that passion then it’s probably worth it. If you love iPhones and just want all the important up to date features then the iPhone 11 is the device to get for what it offers as a complete package I would say. Innovation has been so flat in this industry for a while now and for me I’m more impressed with a device that’s offering enough at a competitive price. It’ll be interesting to see what is unveiled in September.

Btw, is it worth to shift from 8 Plus to 11 or 11 Pro?
That's something you have to decide for yourself. Does the new phone have anything to offer you a better experience than what you have with your current phone? Hard for others to say what's "worth it" or not for your use case. Yes, the new iPhones are great phones, but so is the 8 series.

It was just awful back in the day when we had two year contracts and we had to pay penalty fees to "upgrade" to get a new phone the next year. I like the upgrade options we have now so much.

Agreed! Personally I get bored fast. Really, really fast and I hated being locked in for 2 years. It was just awful. Do I need a new iPhone each year, need the latest and greatest each year, heck no, but if I'm paying for a phone it may as well be the current model. I don't drink, smoke, use drugs this is my only vice. Why pay all at once when for 0 interest, you get the most current model? At least that's my thoughts anyway...

You and I are birds of a feather indeed. Heck, I don't even drink coffee and I know people who spend more than that daily on it.

I’m the opposite and want a phone to last two years lol. I personally don’t know a single person who upgrades annually and have only encountered people that do on this website. I suppose there are many enthusiasts here and this is perhaps the reason.

^THIS 100% Lol. Unfortunately I guess I'm addicted to techie things. At least that's what my wife says. Example: we go out and she laughs that I'm not looking at other women, I'm looking at what phones they're using. Guess there's worse things in life. "Hi I'm Devin, I'm an iPhone-a-holic"

You're right. In normal day to day life most people couldn't even tell you what the name of the current iPhone is, let alone any technical aspects of it. They upgrade out of necessity, not just want. We here are the few that pay attention to such things. Pick a topic, lets say "rock polishing" or "horse jumping" and I'll bet anything there's forums for that niche group too.

No it’s not.

you should check if the 11 isn’t too big for u coming from an SE. alternatively u can get the XS for 650€ from online retailers.

regarding photography the new ones are good but if you manually set a lot with your dedicated camera you can’t do that with the iphone. Especially the portrait mode is hit and miss.

($200 upfront + $200-300 penalty) / 12 months = $33.33-41.67 per month

You own the old phone outright and can sell or trade it in.

Market wasn't saturated yet so resale was better back then, too. The one time I did a trade-in of an off-contract 2-yr old iPhone 3GS (wanted a hassle free transaction), I got ~$200 which was enough to cover the upfront cost for the 4S (so essentially a "free" upgrade apart from the subsidy baked in to the plan cost).

The cost hasn't really gone down. It's just being spread out over a longer period instead of being a one-time cost at upgrade time. Carriers and Apple have also made trade in easier and you already know at time of purchase what the trade in value of your new device is.

Granted, I do use the iPhone Upgrade Program when I get a new phone just to keep my options open. I would've gotten AppleCare+ regardless so even if this is essentially the "financing cost" associated with the program, it make no difference to me.

I think the iPhone 11 is a great upgrade from the SE. Everyone is saying to wait for the 12 but for all we know that iPhone 12s will get a price bump like the Samsung Galaxy devices just got. the entry level iPhone could easily go for $900-$1000 if they are full screen devices.... the iPhone 11 is priced nicely for beats the iPhone SE in every area right now.
