Option to get one of these 3 13” MacBook Pro models:

2016 16gb i7 1tb ssd apple care till September 2020 - £1100

2018 i7 16gb 512gb ssd no warranty - £1500

Current model from Apple Store any option.

My query is are the old ones just as good or is the current model a good upgrade on previous years?

I would pick a refurb 2019 2.4. Perhaps a 2019 1.4, depending what you plan to do with it. I wouldn‘t pick up the older versions due to the kb issues. You’ll at least get the full four years with a refurb.

You DO NOT WANT any 2016 MacBook Pro.

The keyboards on these will soon be out of the "4-year free repair" umbrella.

After that, a keyboard repair is going to cost you $750, minimum.

And chances are that you WILL need one, eventually.

Depends what you plan on doing with the laptop to be honest, but as others have said, why not consider a refurb?

I can't believe this model is coming up for 4 years old already, just realised when you mentioned the 4 year repair coverage @Fishrrman

I will echo others who have mentioned a refurb. I purchased a refurb MacBook Pro in late 2018 and it was so pristine that I couldn't even tell it was a refurb.

Unless I'm mistaken, the four years begins with the sale of the unit, so it shouldn't matter.

Specifically (from the link you provided):

"The program covers eligible MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models for 4 years after the first retail sale of the unit." (emphasis mine)

So, the original retail sale date will determine coverage - vital information for a refurb.

"Unless I'm mistaken, the four years begins with the sale of the unit, "

That applies to "the first point of sale" -- from Apple (or sold "as a new unit" by an Apple authorized dealer). It may also apply to Apple-refurbished units. But this isn't one.

The OP reports that the 2016 MPB has AppleCare until September 2020.
This suggests it was sold in September 2017 ?

In that case, the keyboard is covered until September 2021.
But after that, he's obligated to pay if it breaks.
