That is the problem. Why do we gotta choose between two powerhouses? There are pros and cons on both. I seriously hope that one day they can combine forces and conquer the world.
I really hate these decide-for-me threads. Dawg has it right, but you will probably want reinforcement and group hugs in order to accept it. I/we will be happy to lead, you can follow.
You'll be fine with an iPhone, should you choose to go with iOS.
There is a gmail app on the app store. I believe there is a yahoo email app too, but I could be wrong.
Probably asking the wrong forum since this is a Apple forum, people would most likely recommend you to wait for Apple products.... 
At this point in the game either get the SIII or wait and see what the new iPhone has to offer.
I wouldn't sign a 2yr contract for a 4s now nor would I buy it for the out right price when the new one is right around the corner and this should be a design revision of the phone.

Not if you are on Verizon. The Razr HD is coming late summer. It will have a 4.6 inch 1280x720 display and the same processor as the S3 but it will also have a 13MP camera and the awesome 3300MAH battery from the Razr Maxx. Given Google's recent acquisition of Motorola, you can expect some goodies in there too as they want this to compete directly with the S3 and next iPhone. Just the camera, battery and not having to deal with Touch Wiz already make it better than the S3 on paper. So there are other options coming.
Why would you need the GMAIL app? Get the S III and leave us alone!

Your not just choosing between phones, your choosing between ecosystems. You have to look at the whole picture, not just hardware. Look at app availability and quality, look at how they sync, look at how they are supported, etc. It's not just the phone. If you have to have it now I'd buy a used iPhone 4 for relative cheap and wait for the 5 to come out to contract up.
