Both are $79.99 price one is at futureshop other is at walmart.

Both have 150mhz cpu, 8mb's or ram. I believe the 1640 has toner save while the 1915 doesn't.

1640 = 16 ppm, duty cycle of 5,000 pages. 1200x600

1915 = 19 ppm, duty cycle of 10,000 pages. 1200x600.

Or the Samsung ML-2525W. $129.99

24ppm, 360mhz cpu, Wireless printing, 64mb of ram, 1200x1200, 12,000 page duty cycle .

Home use:

If a network printer says it works with 10.4 then will it work with 10.6?

You get what you pay for.

I had one of these for less than a year before it started smoking with each print and eventually quit working.

It depends. It should work but check samsung's site and see if they have drivers for snow leopard.

Worse comes to worse it will use a generic "gutenprint" driver but I am unsure of their functionality as a network printer.

I have an older (but still functional and good for my use) hp deskjet 5550. When I switched to 10.6, it doesnt have a specific driver and uses gutenprint. For the most part it prints fine but loses some functionality and is occasionally glitchy.

EDIT: Found this thread which should answer your questions and tell you how to get it working in 10.6 :)

The answer is Brother HL-2170W. We've had this thing for ~2 years and the starter toner is still working. It's the first printer we've had that doesn't suck.
