So, updating the game room and we have never had a gaming system and want a PS3 due to the blu-ray, etc. The hard part is which one? The 40, 60(ebay), or 80gb?

We have two kids (6 and 9) and my concern with the 40GB is that it won't play older games. We have no older games but there don't seem to be a lot of kids games on ps3 yet. The 80gb has some backward compatibility but apparently not much while the 60 has full compatibility. . .?!

So, what do you suggest? Pricing is 40GB-399, 60GB (ebay)-475, 80GB-499.

Get the 60GB. The 40GB and 80GB have backward compatibility with PS2 games, however it is by use of software emulation. The 60GB and old 20GB have the actual emotion engine chip from the PS2 on their motherboard, so games will be a lot smoother. Then again, if they are just kid games, which usually are not very demanding, it really won't matter. My suggestion would then be the 60 or 80, the 40 really cuts corners, and if you are spending a lot on a system, might as well get a decent one.

I would get the 40gig, because I believe that new 40 and 80 gig come with a slightly better Cell processor using 65nm technology, while the 60 gig does not.

Unless Sony changed it, the 40gb does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 games. If that is a nessessity then I'd go with the 80gb.

Some one correct me if I'm wrong!

The 60 GB had PS2 hardware in it so it has nearly 100% compatibility with every PS2 game, while the 80GB model plays like 90% of them, so if you want backwards compatibility and it is really important, get the 60 GB...otherwise, get the 80.

If you don't care about backwards compatibility, grab the 40 GB PS3.

The 60GB isn't worth the price premium that it is currently carrying on eBay. I would say get the 80GB now because I am reading reports that the 80GB will be going away after the white 40GB is released. Plus the 80GB comes with Motorstorm for free. See post about it on Beyond3D.

80GB is sticking around, even after the 40GB white comes in to the market.

Maybe, maybe not. But who wants to wait around and possibly be proven wrong. It wouldn't be the first time Sony "quietly" stopped selling a system before officially announcing it (see the 20GB PS3).
