I am hooked up to 2-3 public Wifis, but if I go to Settings/Wifi, all it shows is my home Wifi. None of the other options below that show any of the public Wifis I'm on.

Where do I find this out?

Depends on what iOS version you are on.

If you are on iOS 16, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208941

To forget a network that you've joined before but aren't currently using:

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap Edit in the corner of the screen to see the networks known to your device.
  3. Take either of these actions:
    • Tap the delete button
      ios-16-minus-circle-red-fill.png
      , then tap Delete.
    • Or tap the info button
      ios-16-info-circle-blue-hollow.png
next to the network, tap Forget This Network, then tap Forget to confirm.

Here's what happened today, and it has me creeped out a bit. I was shopping and went to numerous stores, including a Walmart's.

On the way home I'm checking the phone and I saw a text that failed to send. It was to two contacts I have. It was all jibberish. I deleted it.

Per the previous post, I looked at my public Wifis and one was Walmart's which I did not put there, not even sure if they have one. I was miles away from the public Wifis that I do have listed.

Was I hacked? What should I do about it?

Did you use another device such as an iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac on those Wi-Fi networks? Also, some carriers like AT&T have agreements to connect to secure wi-fi in public, you will see this as "Passpoint Secure" etc.

Red: Absolutely not, don't even own any of those. To clarify my OP, I did not send any texts to anyone while I was out. This was done automatically by someone/something else.

I am on ATT (Pretty sure. I cannot find that on the phone, probably hidden like most common things are.) But if it was something they did wouldn't I have been at least notified beforehand? Also didn't see anything like "Passport Secure."

But the failed text must have been created by a hacker, no?

Settings > Cellular

Or: Settings > General > About > Carrier

Also didn't see anything like "Passport Secure."

It will be at the very bottom of Settings > Wifi > Edit, Managed Networks. For ATT, would see "AT&T Wi-Fi Passpoint" and "attwifi".

Probably not. "Butt texting". Like in the old days of accidental phone dialing due to sitting down with a phone in the pocket, this day and age, not unusual for fingers, palms touching things on an unlocked display and doing stuff. Add in widgets, notifications that will do something when touched, can get accidental things happen if not locking the screen when done looking at your phone.

FaceID and Raise to Wake probably does not help with this as well.

Settings > Cellular

Or: Settings > General > About > Carrier

I tried both of them before making the previous post.

"Settings/Cellular": The closest that had was "Carrier Services" which only shows that I'm with Consumer Cellular.

The second one: When I tap "Carrier" all it does is toggle back and forth to: "IMS Status".

It will be at the very bottom of Settings > Wifi > Edit, Managed Networks. For ATT, would see "AT&T Wi-Fi Passpoint" and "attwifi".

It doesn't show any "Managed Networks," only "Known Networks." :(

I keep the phone in my front pocket and always lock the screen.

As long as you don't think I was hacked then I guess I won't worry about it.

Thanks for the info. :D

Another thing is, are you signed on to a Mac at home perhaps? Someone could have typed those messages as gibberish from the Mac, like a child, etc.

No, aside from my SE iPhone, everything else is Windows. Plus I live alone, don't even have a cat anymore -- had to have my 18 year-old mouse-killer euthanized a month ago. But will be getting a kitten in a month or two. :)

When I saw that text, which was supposed to go to one of my sister's land line and a local small business (both in my contacts) I immediately deleted it and blocked the number. I wish I had saved it but I was panicking a bit. :(

Don't have to tap it. Default view of that field is another place where carrier is listed.

And Consumer Cellular is not ATT but are reselling ATT bandwidth, so will not be seeing any ATT customer extras like ATT free hotspots.

I'm aware of that -- when I got my first iPhone in 2019 it came with a T-Mobile SIM and it didn't even work around here, so they sent me an AT&T SIM and it worked fine, as does my current phone.

So I still don't know where to find out that it is, indeed, carried by ATT (although I know that it is). One would think, logically, that this would be easy to find -- but it isn't.

I have seen lot of folks with FaceId unlock the phone after they press lock button looking at the phone. The phone is unlocked when you put it in the lock, it call or text people as the phone moves in the pocket.

Just unlock the phone with face down before you put it in the pocket.
