I just ordered a brand new imac and I would like to order some RAM to upgrade it from 8 to 32 or 16 when I will receive it. What is the brand of the RAM actually used in the iMac? Which brand do you advice to buy?

Apple uses Hynix or Samsung memory, but you may have a difficult time finding either of these brands on the market -- unless you purchase from Apple and pay their exorbitant prices for Apple branded memory, and even then you may not get the exact same modules.

I personally recommend Crucial: their prices are good, quality is excellent, and I've never had a problem with their memory or customer service. Use the "Crucial Advisor" tool on the home page and you will be able to find the correct memory for your machine. Also check out OWC at www.macsales.com - they're known quality, and their prices are competitive with Crucial (albeit slightly higher).

Thanks for your answer. I found the Hynix HMT41GS6BFR8A-PB on Amazon. According the specs it should be OK:

  • Module Size: 8GB (8GBx1)
  • Package: 204-pin SODIMM
  • Feature: DDR3 PC3L-12800
  • Specs: DDR3 PC3L-12800 , CL=11 , Unbuffered , NON-ECC , DDR3-1600 , 1.35V

Hopefully it will be ok....
