How does one determine if a "banding" problem in the screen is a problem with the LCD or with the video card? Can the determination be made without swapping out parts?

Try with an external display and if it occurs on there more than likely graphics. If it doesn't points more towards LCD, but don't rule out bad graphics.

No, i understood it was an iMac - just stating it could be a good way to verify if you had an adapter. id have an AASP check it out in the least.
