11.6/2.0/8gb/256gb vs. 11.6/2.0/8gb/512gb.

The price difference is a lot... not sure which to go with??

My take on it:

I had an MBA with 128 on it, and it was more than fine for what I needed to keep on it all the time (the OS, moderate itunes library, moderate photo collection).

And for much less than the upgrade to a 256 would have cost me at the time, I bought a nice Seagate Firewire/USB drive, 750 GB, that I could use for my Time Machine backups and any extra files I wanted to take with me when I travelled. No separate power supply, same thickness and colour as my MBA.

You're paying a premium for the 512gb storage, personally I'd go for the 256gb model.

Good point too! So far 1 for 512gb and 1 against.

Thank you, the price difference is big.

Oh I forgot to say I currently have 128GB late 2010 11" and it's not enough. 256GB is probably enough but I'm gonna go for 512 because I have the extra money right now.

It really doesn't matter what we think because it's not going to change the performance of the MBA. It's just about what you will be storing on it, whether you're ok with using external storage and if you have the money then why not.

It's only when I travel (I have kids) need the movie collection. Day to day I do need my iPhoto collection which is about 30,000 photos (60 gigs) right now.

What about your iTunes library? Sounds like 256GB should be enough unless you would rather store all your movie collection? Surely you can pick a couple dozen movies before a trip? (depending on their size of course)

My itunes music is 8gb.

Most important question: what size drive do you have now, if you have a laptop, and how much space is being used?

I am silently following this thread, hoping you all will sort out the same 256/512 dilemma I am having. 13" i7 8gb ??? <-- Insert SSD.

All the stores have the maxed out 512, and no 256; I am certain this was on purpose

Oh what to do. Coming from a 2010, this should be a treat irregardless.
So joining the OP- voting continue

I am kinda leaning toward 256gb... seems like the extra cost for 512 could be used for other things.

Screw it I'm going for the 512GB :p
I already ordered it anyway, just waiting for my payment to go through.

That's what I like just go for it :D

But for me I can't afford to burn money :(

Just having an issue with my payment (details here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1388529/)

Then go with 256GB. Should be fine for what you need it for.

i'd go with neither. 11" is too small, and the screen ratio is 16:9 instead of 16:10 on the 13". but that's not the point of this thread. personally i'd buy 128G model. prices of SSD have been falling sharply in recent months. i can just sell the air next year and buy a new one with bigger SSD, the cost difference would be just the same.
