Which slot do I put the OS9 HD in and which slot the OSX one?
Closest vs farhest on the ribbon?

jumper settings on each?

Hard drives should be in "cable select mode" instead of "master" and "slave".
Once both are in "cable select" it should not matter the position.

OS9 Standart in MDD

I think on the ATA-66 bus and you can install a standart OS9.
MDDs need special OS9 only if they install on ATA-100 bay

MDD's need their special OS 9 installation when installing or using it on any of their internal buses.

I tought using it as target mode and installing from another mac thru firewire

Probably won't work because the MDDs would need special drivers that would have been released after the last retail version of OS9. You'll need the restore discs that shipped with that machine or you're out of luck I believe.

Won't work. Even if you copy over a fully updated OS 9.2.2 installation from say an iMac G4 or other Mac, it won't work. Mdd's can only boot into OS 9 from their special OS 9 installation.

MOD: no illegal info here, anymore.

Since my post here, was deleted - same as the thread about OS 9 (that got deleted just yesterday and before it was ok, it was "laying" around in this forum) I will now post, that one should go to OS 9 lives forums to get help beyond text information

The very poor thing is, that in my OS 9 thread they did not just delete the one problematic link, but they did delete the whole thread/post with (what I found) useful information on problems with certain hardware or about drivers for some graphics cards (which was all legal).

Also there are the official Update links on Apple's service sites where you can update you OS 9 for free, if you possess the CD with a lower version number than 9.2.2. You can google them, legally.
