Hi all,

Can anyone advise which SSD drive and conversion bay to buy for a late 2009 iMac? I'd like to replace the superdrive with a SSD instead of buying a Mac Mini seeing as I already have a 2.66Ghz CPU.

Also, while I've got it open, are there any 2TB drives that are known to work with the 2009 iMac without setting off the fan full time? Or was this the last model before that became a problem ?

Thanks in advance,

I can recommend the Samsung 830 SSD, it is pretty fast and really reliable.
How to replace just check ifixit http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel

thanks - yeah, the iFixit guide looks pretty straightforward.

I'm struggling for a bay though. iFixit list http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/12-7-mm-SATA-Optical-Bay-SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure/IF107-081 as being the right one, but I don't want to buy from the US and pay duties.

*Edit* - wrong URL
Would something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2nd-SATA-...es_HardDriveEnclosures_RL&hash=item4ab74a9a9c work ?

Hello Friends,

I just went ahead and put the SSD in with an icydock 2.5" to 3.5" HDD adapter and I just left the thermal sensor unplugged and it works fine, but my computer thinks that the HDD is 128 degrees Celsius which may or may not be a problem.

Best Regards

Sounds like you replaced your existing HDD, right ?

I'm trying to add an SSD in place of the optical drive.

I changed the HDD in my 2009 iMac a while ago, to a Western Digital Black 1Tb drive. I left the thermal sensor unconnected (as there was no place to hook it up) and was expecting the fans to run crazy, but they didn't. Apparently, OS X can read the drive temperature through the S.M.A.R.T interface from disks that support it.

If for some reason you still get fans that go crazy, have a look at http://www.hddfancontrol.com/
