I bought an HP Smart Tank 7602 a year and half ago and have clogged cyan and couldn't get it unclogged after trying several things from YouTube. I have ordered a replacement head that's coming from China. If it doesn't work, I'll have to buy another printer. I will never buy small cartridge printers again. The ink cost is pathetic. On the other hand, this printer dying in 1.5 years is pathetic also. Either way, have any of you bought HP, Epson and/or Canon tank printers? Which do you prefer? For me, I bought the HP because I've had both Epson and HP in the past and the HP printed darker blacks on most papers. That was my deciding factor.

Do you need to print photo-quality pictures? If not, a color laser saves a lot of ink headaches. That's what I switched to. My Canon imageClass MFC has been zero-headaches for over five years now.

No, don't have to print super high quality pictures. Just a general use printer. So, looks like inkjet is not so popular any more. Yes, they are a pain in the @ss. I hope my replacement print head works but, I have my doubts. Up to the ink clog, we had zero problems with the HP Smart Tank 7602. I only have about 700 prints on it and the ink level hasn't even moved. Still full. So, the ink purchasing has worked like I wanted but, the clog hasn't. In the past I had Epson inkjet printers and they did clog fairly frequently but, I used to print 5" x 8" rectangles filled with the color with the clog and they always unclogged. It didn't work with this HP. So, I guess most here are saying forget the inkjet and go laser.

My parents have an HP ink jet printer, and if it's not used for more than 2-3 weeks, the cartridge will clog and the only reliable solution is a new cartridge.

My wife's preschool used an Epson EcoTank ink jet printer 5100 series, I think, which other than the wireless connection being flaky at times seemed pretty reliable, but it was used regularly most of the year. If going ink jet, that is the direction I would go. Filling the tanks manually is way more cost effective than cartridges.

That said, the advice to go laser is probably the best. If I ever pick up a new printer for home use, it'll be laser.

As @poorcody suggests, unless you’ve a need to print photos and/or print on glossy paper, a laser really is the way to go. Especially if you’re not printing all the time, the laser cartridges don’t clog or have ink drying up like inkjets. If you only need to print they’re about the same cost as a decent inkjet, and even the multi-function models aren’t excessively priced these days.
