I'd like to get my Mother a used Apple watch for it's heart monitoring function. Far as I can tell, there hasn't been any new heart monitoring functions or sensors added to the newer watches, so I should be able to get by with an older model. We're not concerned with getting any monitoring function like blood oxygen level, only heart monitoring.

How far back in models can I go when looking for this used watch and it still have all the heart monitoring functions the newest watches have? As far as I know Apple hasn't added any new heart monitoring sensors for a few models now.

S4 or newer.

Interesting personal story…

Got my elderly mother her S4 when it launched for fall protection mostly but also heart monitoring.

She was having heart issues and the doctor sent her home with either EKG or some actual medical device to monitor her heart rate overnight (one night) and it showed no issues, but the watch kept alerting all the time that her heart rate was dropping below 45 even 40 or less Beats per minute.

Looked up and found a way to export several months worth of heart rate data with many reading in the 30s.

As soon as the doctor saw all that he said you need a pacemaker NOW.

They installed the pacemaker and it has saved her more than once with other illnesses.
She loves her watch for many reasons…

Thank you so much!

Now I'm wondering...have there been any other health monitoring upgrades other than the heart monitoring and pulse Ox that might be beneficial? Fall alert and pulse rate would be two.

Thank you for this post.

I have heart problems and have been thinking I ought to get a Apple Watch.

I have a Macbook Pro laptop and was hoping that the Apple Watch would be able to export the Heart/Health Data to the laptop so it can be shared with the Doctors.
Is this possible?
I think this would be the best one? But I am not sure?

Please advise and thank you for the help and advice.

there is no Health app on macOS, but you can export on your phone and then obviously send it over to your Mac ...

as for which model, keep in mind that S9/Ultra2 sold by Apple currently has blood oxygen disabled, which might be important for you or not

You need an iPhone connected to the watch, not a MBP.

Share your health and fitness data in XML format

You can export all of your health and fitness data from Health in XML format, which is a common format for sharing data between apps.
  1. Tap your picture or initials at the top right.
If you don’t see your picture or initials, tap Summary or Browse at the bottom of the screen, then scroll to the top of the screen.
  2. Tap Export All Health Data, then choose a method for sharing your data.

I'd encourage you too gamboolman. I've heard of cases where doctor prescribed heart tests didn't pick up on heart conditions whereas the watch did simply because it's worn and testing all the time.
