Hello,

As the title suggests, what virtual machine is the best to run Minecraft Bedrock? Preferably it’ll be a free one, as the one time purchase for Parallels is absurd, especially since the virtual machine will be only used to play Minecraft.

Also, how much ram should I allocate to the virtual machine? I have an 8GB RAM M2 MacBook Air, with about 6-6.5GB being used and about 1.3GB is compressed.

Thanks.

You'll have to allocate at least 4G of RAM to run Windows, but it's not going to be very fast at it, and it'll slow the rest of your machine down too, plus the passive cooling isn't great for VM's.

Isn't there a Java version? That might work better than a Windows VM.

Hmmm. I guess so. I might mess around after schools over then.

When you allocate RAM to a virtual machine, and you decide you don’t want to use the virtual machine anymore, you can delete it and get the RAM back, right?

Java will work much better since it’s native, but playing with my brothers, who are on Bedrock, requires some workarounds. I suppose I could find an older iOS device and jailbreak it to dump Minecraft Bedrock.

You get it back when you shut down the VM -- it only allocates the RAM when it's running, so that's really not a problem.

It might be worth the trouble. I don't play minecraft, but I do use Java apps on my mac and they work well.

So theoretically, when I play Minecraft in a virtual machine, I should shut everything else down and things might go smoothly.

The Java workarounds might be the best option until I can figure something out.

They might go smoothly anyway, MacOS is decent at handling swap, but I would expect those other apps to be as fast as normal if you tried to use them while the VM was running, but the VM shouldn't be effected much. Hard to tell without just doing it as see. :)

I would go the Java way, but I really don't know what it entails for minecraft. I'm not great at games like that so I haven't tried them much.

Yeah. I’ll just have to try it out.

Supposedly there is a demo version of the Windows version of Minecraft Bedrock.

I guess a Windows virtual machine is the best way to play Minecraft Bedrock. If you use PlayCover, SIP needs to be disabled the entire time you’re playing, and you need a decrypted ipa to play Minecraft with Sideloadly or self signing it, meaning you need to jailbreak a device.

Or I could load Linux and there is a launcher that allows people to play the Android version of Bedrock. The launcher is also on MacOS, but it’s an Intel app so it might not run well.

Geeeeeeeez. I tried to play the demo version of Minecraft Bedrock on my Vmware Fusion VM, and it sucks. The frame rate must be puny, since it tracks everything I do, but it’s so slow and laggy. The lag is very consistent. Must be because the only graphical support is OpenGL and I found on the Minecraft Fandom that Minecraft for Windows requires DirectX.

If "you can get the Bedrock Edition on... iOS" and you have M2 MacBook Air, have you tried to install it?

PlayCover "Run iOS apps and games on Apple Silicon Macs with mouse, keyboard and controller support. " https://github.com/PlayCover/PlayCover
I have tried, the thing is that my mouse cursor isn’t locked to the center, and I’m hearing noises that’s supposed to mean my keyboard input is not applying to anything, but I’m moving in Minecraft. I wonder if it’s the ipa.

I need to go and find a device and jailbreak it to decrypt the ipa, as PlayCover doesn’t accept encrypted ipa. Or I could find one on the internet, but you know how that goes.

Thanks. I guess there’s only three options to play Minecraft Bedrock unless Microsoft releases a Mac port.

Windows virtual machines: Parallels is the best one to play games, but it is expensive, and the other VMs don’t have the appropriate graphical support.

Minecraft Bedrock Linux Launcher: This is probably the cheapest way, as you have to buy it in the Google Play store for $7, though the launcher is an x86 app and requires Rosetta 2 in order to run, so may see some performance hits.

PlayCover: Depends on the ipa file you have, or may just be a Minecraft PlayCover issue as the mouse cursor doesn’t lock to the center, or it locks to center all the time and you need a controller or move out of full screen. Getting an ipa file requires a jail broken device, or illegally finding one on the internet.

Also, for PlayCover, SIP needs to be off the entire time you’re playing and the nvram arguments need to be modified.
