With the new 2018 MacBook Pros the 13” is now a Quad Core powerhouse of a laptop. And the similarly sized 13” Air is underpowered by comparison and in need of a better screen.
The 15” MacBook Pro is what it is. Great computer. Good size. Decent weight. 6 Core monster. But overkill for most of us.
The 12” MacBook is a little sad. Great little machine, but little and underpowered nonetheless.
And the 11” Air is even worse. At that size, just get an iPad, right?
So the obvious step for Apple would be to offer both differentiation and options. Merge the 12” MacBook and 13” Air into a single MacBook line. Obviously they are going to go the direction all USB-C. Not expecting otherwise. And all their notebooks should be Retina. And all should likely include the TouchBar. But who knows if they would be that bold.
It would make the most sense to have the new line continue with a 12” model as realistically the smallest size you really want in the market and introduce a 14” version. This would give people who want a bigger screen but don’t want the power or to spend $2,500-$3,500 on a MacBook Pro, the option of something larger than a 12” or the current 13” Air.
Would you buy a 14” MacBook if it wasn’t really crippled over a 13” MBP or MBA as an alternative to the 15” MBP?
I realize this isn’t going to appeal to Pros.
