iPhone 12 mini While on call, iMessage thread switches to SMS

Has anyone experience this issue where while on a phone call and you try to text a contact with iMessage, the thread switches to green SMS? I’m on WiFi so it shouldn’t affect the connection to iMessage servers.

It happens to all my contacts who have iMessage enabled. The moment I end the call it reverts back to blue.

My phone is on iOS 14.3.

Are you in the U.S. on AT&T? This happened to me when I used E-SIM. There was no way to fix it, I had to go back to using a physical SIM.

Not in the US, but yes, I'm using an eSIM. This is such a weird behavior.
