White box on iPhone screen?

So I have an iPhone 4S, but yesterday as I was playing with my friends iPhone 4S I saw on the side of his screen a white box with a tiny circle in it... and when my friend pressed the box, the box itself moved to the center of the iPhone screen and on all four sides of the white box a icon appeared. I didnt see clearly what the icons were but ...
What is this?

I think it is assistance touch. Go to settings/general/accessibility and turn on assistive touch. This function is for those who are not able to use the buttons or multitouch gestures.

My iPod touch's power button broke and when I was waiting on the warranty replacement to come in the mail, I had to use it to shut off. I got so used to it, I now use it on my iPad

Perhaps people that are paralysed and have limited movement? I'm sure it helps some people.
