White box on screen on Late '08 MacBook Pro

I have a late '08 MacBook Pro and have a strange situation where every once in a while I get a large white rectangle on the screen. I have discovered it has to do with iTunes. I open iTunes and several other apps. and they stay running in the dock. Every so often when I wake up the Mac from sleep there is a white box on the screen. When I open iTunes, it covers the box as the box is the same size as the iTunes window and when I minimize iTunes again the box goes away (until the next time). Any idea how to stop the box from showing up?
