My girlfriend's about to make the switch to Mac, which is awesome.

Anyway, she likes how the white MacBook looks, but the black MacBook has better "stuff." But I was looking at it today, and it looks like the only difference between the "upper-level" white and the black is the hard drive? Upgrading the white's hard drive to 160GB still makes it cheaper than the black MacBook.

What else is different to make the black MacBook more expensive? I'm confused.

truth is nothing.
although the black is "matte" and wont show scratches as easily, but not worth all that extra money

Nothing. It's (un)affectionately referred to as the BlackTax. You are paying a premium for the colour.

Yes, it's ridiculous.

Thanks, good to know! That is pretty ridiculous.

Do the white ones still have the discoloration issue with the palm rests? That's her other concern (that I told her about :D).

Mine does. However, this issue has been acknowledged by Apple and they will replace the case to one that will not discolour.

7200 RPM + Laptop = (HEAT + PWN3D)

not true....

I have a 17" MBP with a new Hitachi 200GB 7200RPM drive. Right now I am converting some movies to iPod compatible movies with VisualHub. It's been going at it for 18 hours (I had a lot of video!). Here are the specs (no heat issues, CPU maxed)...

Of course 17" MBP = really big heatsink with plenty of space between components whereas 13" plastic covered macbook = pressure cooker. You will not get those low temperatures at full pelt on the mb.

Having said that, the hard drive is not the hottest part of either my macbook or my macbook pro, so for most uses, the faster drive should be fine.
