I'm confused. I have 1Gb (2x512mb) of RAM in there now. I want to upgrade to at least 2GB of RAM. My question is, do I need to buy 2x1GB of RAM, or could I buy a 2GB stick and replace one of my 512MB sticks to make it 2.5GB? What about one 4GB stick by itself? I know the maximum I can have is 4GB. My Macbook is the early 2008 model.

Crucial will tell you exactly what you need, you can download their program and it will check for you so you don't have to worry about not completely understanding it. :D

No get 2x1GB, matched pairs takes advantage of dual channel memory which is faster.

+1

But seriously, check out the Crucial scanner, you don't have to buy from Crucial (it is a completely trustworthy site) but it will tell you exactly what you can have.

my macbook is similar to yours,i bought it march 2008. i found 2G memory is too small for it. my coworker has same issue( he has same macbook as mine) recently i upgraded it from 1Gx2 to 2Gx2. and it runs fantastic now.
i think it's time to upgrade memory for macbook. ram is hell cheap now.
you can get 4g ram below 40 bucks
