iPod touch White screen and crash

so i am trying to fix my friends ipod touch 2nd gen. the problem is when he goes into apps, it will almost always on any app, crash and then the ipod will freeze for a min. then it will go to a white screen for a min. the turn off. it was jailbroken with greenpoison and has been restored multiple times. there are not any apps on it and when i go into safari and go to google search, it crashes. a friend thought it would be funny to take a bunch of pics(screenshots) with it once when i had him look at it, and that also made it do this, so my guess is that it has to do with ram problems. i have also read that ipod touch 2g sometimes have issues with it trying to report a crash or something and it like freaks out and crashes itself(or something along those lines). i am not even able to restore it anymore(its currently on 4.2.1) and i even tried downgrading, to no avail. i also tried using a custom firmware and put it in pwned dfu mode and still nothing. it wont even get past "preparing ipod for restore" but that could be because i was in dfu all the times i tried to restore...even tho i wouldnt have thought that would have cause the problem with not restoring. i also want to add, the ipod does not go to the apple logo with a little bar when trying to restore, the screen just remains black. i told him i could probably fix it and i dont want to let him down. i am still afraid it is a hardware problem, not software. thanks to anyone who can help!
