I own a late 2008 Macbook Unibody 13" 2.4ghz. Other than a new magsafe power cord, it has been all smiles. That is until today.

Last night, I installed some updates for the computer. I had to restart for the applications to finish. After the restart, the computer was working fine. I went to bed. The next day, the computer came off of sleep fine. Shortly after, it began acting extremely sluggish. I was only browsing the internet, with a few tabs open. I would get the spinwheel for a minute of longer, then return to operation. I went through this process a few times, then the computer froze. I forced it to turn off holding the power button down.

Upon restart, I was on the white screen. Research told me to try a variety of start up key combinations. I tried to inserting the Mac OSX repair/reinstall disc, as well the disc for hardware test. I was unable to boot from either. Nor was I able to get any key combo to work, such as single user, the option key, or anything else. I tried resetting the ram by using the option command p r key code. The computer did restart after this, without change. I also reset the SMC, by removing the battery and holding down power key. Also no difference.

The wierd thing is, though, at one point the computer was booting to Windows XP SP3 that I had installed with Boot Camp/Parallels Desktop. It was doing this after some variety of key combination that I don't recall. It would sit on the white screen for a few minutes then start the boot into Windows. In windows, I was able to use the Mac OSX disc I had installed. There were no options on it that could help me (I think). I was even able to successfully restart the computer (on request from that disc) and it booted back to windows successfully. I then foolishly held down the option key after a restart hoping that for some reason the computer had improved. It had not, and now won't boot to windows or anything. White screen only, nothing but.

Additionally, sometimes the power adapter (used part) will vary between solid green and dimly lit green on the led. Removing and reinstalling the cable gets rid of the dim lit green, goes back to bright. Or if I leave it it will switch back from dim to bright by itself shortly. Not sure if this is related to the problem of not, but regardless of color, the computer would still register connected (when the laptop still worked). I don't think this is related to my current issue, however I'm far from an expert.

Could anyone here offer any advice to me? I would very much like to avoid spending $50 just to talk with Apple on the phone. The nearest Apple store is 100 miles away, so I'm hoping to figure out my issue without resorting to that (plus my warranty is expired).

Thanks Very Much!
