White screen Iphone, Not recognized but lights up when pluged in

Basically its a 3g 8gb, press the power button = White screen. Ive tried all the different button pressing resets. It also doesnt come up in itunes on multiple pcs and macs. But if its off and i plug it into the mains or a usb it lights up with the white screen. Its well out of warrenty, i have done a number of iphone 2g rebuilds so wanted to try do the 3g up, however need to know what to replace. Is it worth buying a new LCD and a Dock connector? or has the motherboard gone :S :(

Any help please? :confused:
