iPod touch white screen now will not turn on

today my son's ipod touch had a white screen and would not shut off. plugged it into my mac, needed an update, would not accept update, tried twice. Now it will not turn on and is not recognized by my mac. :eek:

Tried the hold both buttons, tried to hold both buttons for 10 seconds then plug it in at the same time. restarted computer...

Any ideas?
