My 2011 Macbook Pro suddenly has a couple of white spots on it. I did not see how this happened. I never take it anywhere - it always stays on a desk in my room. The only possible thing I can think of is I have this hand sanitizer dispenser near the desk, and sometimes when I squirt it on my hands, a few drops might scatter nearby. Could hand sanitizer actually cause damage like this? I tried using a wet towel to wipe it off, and then tried using some rubbing alcohol, and those spots aren't going away.

Is the area smooth or rough? Tried laying a wet cloth on it for a bit and then trying to remove the residue? Could it be that the aluminum has come in contact with a chemical that has etched the aluminum?
