I know what a blacklist is , but what is whitelist ? does the void warranty issues if there are on a device?

i'm guessing whitelisting means a factory unlock, not locked to a specific carrier like at&t.

thanks, because I just purchased a phone , the wifi is greyed out , he swore it was working until he did a reset , i've done a few resets and nothing worked so might be a hardware issue, i wouldn't want to take it to apple and turns out it's a stolen phone or something that would look awful

Greyed out wifi is a hardware issue and they only way to fix it would be to take it to Apple. If it's out of warranty then you're out of $150. I wouldn't want to use an iPhone that can't even access Wifi

Just take it to apple and be honest. If its been reported stolen they'll know. Afaik they aren't going to confiscate it, or call police, or anything like that. I don't think there is much to worry about aside from perhaps bruising your pride.

I checked the repair and coverage and it's good until Nov 2013

Then what's the problem? Just schedule a Genius appointment.

I did , I checked the imei before the purchase I was just trying to find out if there is a way to check if it's stolen or not, checked it on swappa and it said the iPhone is whitelisted...

That just means it is permanently unlocked. Now go make an appointment. If they replace the phone, be sure and tell them to unlock it.

I can unlock it myself lol I wouldn't give them a hard time about it... fingers crossed appt in an hour

If it did have it's imei blocked (not called blacklisted), then you'd know. You'd get a message whenever you tried making a call saying that the device is blocked from network use. I'm assuming you have an AT&T one.

white list refers to the list of imei's added to apples unlocked imei list. Only carriers have access to this list, they register your phone with apple as confirmed to unlock, carriers add it to registered unlock list. So when tell you to connect to itunes, your phone then requests the permission from apples server via itunes, your baseband is updated. Sometimes you may have to restore, this is because during restore process it guarantees the request is sent, and is updated. This list is the whitelist.
