I doubt it's a coating, since it's $50 more. Probably is like the previous generation. That would justify the price.

They take off the glass (the black around the screen on regular MBP is painted on the glass), and then they put in a matte screen, then add a silver bezel to finish it.

Judging from the apple picture I think you are absolutely correct. I would still love to see some more pictures. Also, wouldn't it be cool if they gave us option for silver keyboard? That would be awesome with the unibody design :)

Thanks for the replies everyone, but has anyone seen one in person at the macworld expo?

Also, does anyone know how long it will take until we see the new 17" in the apple stores? do you think it will be before or after the release date?

That's actually what Phil said at the keynote yesterday, so it is correct.

ahh, still haven't watched it yet (mainly because it was a boring keynote in terms of how the products impacts me). I was just going off gizmodo saying that it was $50 because configurations have to be made.

I would think it would be in the physical stores the same day that they are released on their web store.

Unless the apple store is in a big city (like boston) they don't usually get new products until 2 days after they're in stores. My local apple store didn't have the 15.4" unibody MBP until 3 days after they were available online.

Do you mean available to pre-order or available to buy?

For those of you who missed it.

Would it also be lighter than the glossy version? because glass is pretty heavy actually....

They take off the glass .

If anyone honestly believes that Apple does the following, they need help.

Apple build a laptop
Put a display on it
Put a black bezel around it.
Put glass on the front
Take the glass off again
Put a difference bezel on.
Sell it.

Seriously - Apple are not THAT incompetent are they? They're giving its users an extra $50 shaft. Apple are swallowing their pride with this, and they want to get a nice kickback for doing so.

The matte option is BTO so they don't put the glass at all, just put the silver bezel.

Any MBP 17" you buy from the store will have the glass only.

I for one am waiting for the 15" MBP with this same option, 17" is too big for me. It's a welcome addition that Apple listened. Good job.

It wasn't at Macworld. They only showed the glossy 17", though it was beautiful to look at and the bezel is thinner. ;)
