I bought the X when the XS came out and saved nearly $600 on a 256GB model with AppleCare+. Is anyone else anxiously waiting to get an 11 Pro next year when the 12 comes out? If rumors are true and the 12 has a new design with 5G, I fully expect the 11 Pro models to take a much bigger hit in prices (think fire sales) compared to the X and the XS used prices. Everyone and their mother will want the new design.

I always buy the newest iPhone every year, but I follow this idea with Apple Watches. I just got a used series 4 stainless steel for 1/2 of what it originally cost. I always say this time of the year is great for anyone looking for an upgrade: either buy the latest model or get last years model for a great discount.

That's what I did. Bought a mint used space grey iphone 8plus 256gb in october for just under €600. Still love it and no need for upgrading this year.

I bought a 6 Plus when the 6S Plus was current. My next phone this year will be a 7.
I believe in staying way behind the curve, like at least 2 years.
To me, iPhones are like movies. You can pay full price the day it's released or buy the DVD a few years later for a couple bucks. The end experience is exactly the same, you just experienced it later on. What difference will that make when you look back at your life? I'll tell you. None

i brought brand iPhone 8 right after the iPhone 11 announcement (with trade in or iPhone 6 128GB few days before the announcement for 140CAD and iPad Pro 10.5 inch which I don’t use after the 12.9 inch purchase) and I brought the iPhone 7 two days before iPhone 11 goes on sale at Apple Store.

I will never purchase the newest phone available, i never find justifiable for fork out more than one grand for a phone. But that just me.

But it is not new and shinny anymore. You gonna need to show off the Matt midnight green anymore... LOL...

Except if you are on the more serious side of photography with your phone images, then the latest phone can be worth it, as you can't go back and get some pics again. That said I moved from SE to XS Max ... actually I only use the XS Max for photos, the SE is my phone, and I have backups. I am moving to the 11 Pro Max for photos though, someone could get an awesome deal on my XS Max, but if I don't keep it for some reason then I will likely just give it away and save someone else the upgrade pain. Buying last year's model is always a good strategy I've used it with iPads even though I've also bought quite a few on release day; what ever works for you.

Yes but why not just get in to a trade in cycle?

plenty of people are only paying $400-$500 every year. They trade in their XS and get the 11 Pro Max.

then you’d be paying only $400-$500 every time the latest phone drops.

if you already owned a iPhone XS. You could trade in for a 11 Pro for only $400 bucks.
